Legalization Of Marijuana - The Biblical Argument
October 3, 2008 – 3:09 pmby Darren
Laws against marijuana are man-made, of that fact there can be no argument. The courts of many nations have decided that the plant is to be outlawed, despite the hearty approval of many of their citizens. There are a number of plants that are illegal and growing them could result in fines and imprisonment.
It was none other that God who said: “See, I give you every seed-bearing plant that is upon all the earth, and every tree that has seed-bearing fruit; they shall be yours for food.” You’ll notice he didn’t mention any exclusions. He gave Adam all of the see bearing plants on earth, including, presumably, cannabis. Yet man stands in the way of other people’s God-given right to have access to this plant.
For much of history, God’s mandate that man could use cannabis was honored. It’s only been a product of relatively recent times that has seen the prohibition of such a useful plant. Even in the United States, a country which has become a fanatical opponent of marijuana, relatively few laws existed against the cultivation of the plant until politics in the 20th century made prohibition popular.
It wasn’t until passage of the The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 that marijuana use and cultivation became illegal.
Marijuana use is banned, even for sacramental use
Even people who want to use marijuana as part of a religious sacrament, cannot do so. In fact, people who have tried this type of defense in court usually go straight down in flames. Despite the fact someone might genuinely use marijuana as a sacrament, and the fact they might interprest Genesis 1:29 literally, it won’t help them when they go up against a court appointed official.
Despite what God may have wanted for his children, it turns out that man knows best, after all. Or at least until the laws change.
